TED Blog

8506166674_27b6649d38_b As 2013 draws to a close, TED is deeply humbled to have posted 1600+ talks , each representing an idea worth spreading. So which ideas have had the most widespread impact? Below, a look at the 20 most-watched talks as of December 2013. These viewership numbers include all the platforms we track: TED.com, YouTube, iTunes, embed and download, Hulu and more.

Some fascinating things to notice on this list, if you’d like to compare and contrast it to the most popular talks in 2012, and to the list we shared back in 2011: Amy Cuddy, Susan Cain, David Blaine and Pamela Meyer are all newcomers to the list, with Cuddy’s talk storming to spot #5 thanks to you sharing it. Meanwhile, Brene Brown’s talk has doubled in its number of views since 2012, with Simon Sinek and Mary Roach’s talks coming close to that line. And finally, Ken…

Twitter video previews in iOS

Checking out a linked video from within Twitter?s official mobile apps is frequently a clumsy process, but it?s about to get a lot smoother. The social network has started rolling out simple in-line video previews on both its Android and iOS apps. If you?ve received the upgrade, you?ll see thumbnails of clips in your timeline; all you have to do is tap them to watch the footage from within the Twitter app. The move is no doubt meant to drive up views of promoted videos, but we won?t mind if it helps us catch up on cat videos during our daily commutes.

Never one to disappoint, Google’s newest doodle celebrates International Woman’s Day with a beautiful video and design. The doodle depicts female chromosomes as well as a button to click for an interactive video that features inspiring women from countries all around the world.

Screen shot 2014-03-07 at 3.43.22 PMWith over 100 women featured we see the education avtivist from Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai, Russian comedian Nonna Grishaeva, the Moldova Minister of education, Maia Sandu and so many more incredible individuals.

Google did an excellent job of celebrating and empowering women with this doodle! It was so refreshing to see a company embrace this particular day, I’d love to see more companies step up and share a similar message.

If you’d like to see a complete list of all of the amazing women featured in the video click here.

Are you currently using LinkedIn to prospect for leads? If not, you are missing out on a huge opportunity. With hundreds of millions of users, the more time you spend on this social site the better chance you have of connecting with professionals who could benefit from using your products and/or services. Here is the number one excuse for not using LinkedIn to drum up new business: I have no idea how to get started. Here are three cool (and simple) way to prospect for fresh leads on LinkedIn:

1. Review the profile of those who you believe would be…

Fail faster!03072014-tumblr_mz5xtmjTc21s0hgiko1_500

Reading student critiques of their social media experience is a highlight for me.

Everyone fails.

It’s impossible not to.

No one achieves the thing they set out to do, mostly because what they set out to do was so vaguely defined as to be well, impossible.

Which is perfect.

The class succeeds exactly because everyone fails. Not failing grades (mind you), but failure at achieving some vague world-altering purpose. It’s safe, convenient and inexpensive to fail in this class.

And worth every penny.

Because the lessons learned from trying something and hearing a target audience respond (or not, silence teaches many lessons as well) are entirely applicable to most any job these students will look for post-graduation. By trying and failing, they’ve learned lessons about specificity in word choice, the need to set a realistic purpose for engaging an audience, that social technologies can be fun and frustrating…
